San Jordi (Sant Jordi de Ses Salines)

Next to the airport, near Playa d’en Bossa and Salinas, lies the village of San Jordi. The village of San Jordi is centred around the church. In every town or village on the island you will find a church, but the church in this village is different…It’s the only one built in the 15th Century and its crowned by battlements. The church was built for the farmers, working at the Ses Salines salt flats, and their families. It served many purposes: it met their spiritual needs, and they found shelter and a hiding place in the walls to disappear from the pirates view as the walls are fortified. On Sundays it was a place to catch up with others and to socialize after they went to church.

San Jordi has some bars and restaurants, a supermarket and a bank. However, San Jordi is most of all famous because of its flea market. Every Saturday the horse racing venue, Hipodrome, is the stage for locals to sell all their stuff on small blankets or straight out of their vans. When you enter the market you can still smell the scent of horses. In the centre of the arena it is crowded with buyers on a mission for the best catch and vendors selling anything you can think of: small dogs, second-hand objects, brand new house ware, handicrafts, clothes, leather, and last but not least, Churros! Churros are typical Spanish rolls with sugar and commonly eaten along with a glass of chocolate milk…nice!

So, head to San Jordi on a Saturday morning and start another beautiful day with Churros and a good deal on the market!
