AMMA architects
Since 2007 the Spanish architect Elena Cabrera Vacas and the Dutch architect Sander Laheij have been working together on projects and international competitions and in august 2009 they founded AMMA architects.
AMMA architects is a young international and ambitious team with a practice specialized in concept development, as well as design in all areas of architecture. They don’t just draw but listening carefully to your wishes and needs and keep the physical, social and cultural context in mind.
AMMA architects prefers to participate on projects from the beginning, looking for different options according to the client’s needs and budget. After the design phase and when all the ideas are crystallized, Elena and Sander closely participate in the technical construction phase, rather important in order to achieve a good result. They are open to new technical solutions on the market and to investigate the possibilities to apply them in the design.
Both, simple and clear Design and Execution quality are essential in their philosophy.
As accredited Spanish-Dutch architects they have the advantage of working in both countries: Spain and The Netherlands. They offer our service and advice on different areas such as: ideas and studies for interior design or renovation as well as complete projects for new construction.

AMMA projects:
Competition for 60 dwellings for young families,
Córdoba, Spain. AMMA architects designs in
this case “Patio” dwellings which is a typical Andalusian typology. In order to
connect the project with the architecture of the environment, AMMA made use of
traditional materials, colors and motifs.
Ideas
for ‘pleinwoningen’, Hengelo. This was an initiative by
The Town Hall of Hengelo to provide a Collective Private Commissioning
catalogue with inspiring designs for their plots. AMMA architects played with
the materials of the elevations, the openings and the sculptural indoor
staircase which organizes the space around it.
Competition for a private free standing dwelling,
Enschede. The name ‘LOS HOES’ makes
reference to the historic farm’s typology from Twente. The design for the
dwelling consists of two volumes which are connected by a half-buried basement
with a patio to provide it with light.
Multifunctional holiday home, South Limburg. Design for a holiday home situated next to the main
house, a beautiful old Dutch farm. AMMA
proposed a longitudinal, simple wooden pavilion placed on the south side of the
plot, creating a sense of privacy for the garden of the main house and a
contrast with the old construction. This pavilion is made of prefabricated
wooden panels.
Renovation apartment, Madrid. The owners of this apartment asked AMMA architects to
help them with a new interior design which had a great impact of the majority
of the apartment. AMMA presented the new distribution and ideas to them through
3d images and drawings.
Interior design Sunday Afternoon office, The Hague. Situated in the old
PPT building, AMMA architects has designed a new interior for the office based on a
low-cost solution (cupboards system and a hanging lamp constructed from cheap
Ikea lamps). AMMA also designed and constructed a bamboo meeting table.
Additionally they proposed new ideas for the multifunctional common area.
Competition centre of
modern arts “Genieloods”, Kunstfort Vijfhuizen. The aim of this competition was the renovation and
transformation of this pavilion with historic value into a centre of modern
arts. AMMA designed a longitudinal freestanding red volume inside the
historic shell where part of the program is placed, creating a route as well as
contrast with the old structure of the building, allowing it to be better
admired.
Research Jaap Bakema Foundation fellowship. The board of the Jaap Bakema Foundation has awarded its 2010/2011 fellowship to Elena Cabrera Vacas for her research into ‘BeNI-YORK versus Marbella BEACH – Devouring Urbanism on the Spanish Coast’. Thanks to the support of the Jaap Bakema Foundation, the research will be concluded with a presentation at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) in Rotterdam and a publication in the A10 new European architecture periodical in 2011.
